I once again apologize for the sparsity of my posting on this blog, but I have been very busy completing my project during the last two weeks of my REU program. But here I continue the much missed Monday Mandarin Meanings. Today I shall discuss the word below:
This is tángláng, the word for mantis (or paying mantis). I chose this word because, while I was sadly unable to collect many non-ant insects due to my busy schedule, I was able to collect a large mantis – the invasive Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis), in fact! Here’s a picture of the pinned specimen:
It’s not greatly in focus, but the (somewhat dirty) quarter gives you an idea of the insect’s size!
Anyways, I normally think of an interpretation of the characters which somehow apply to the insect, but I am unable to do so this time. So I guess tonight is just a Monday Mandarin. Sounds like a salad.
